How to Beat FNAF 2 - Complete Strategy Guide
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is significantly harder than the original. Instead of 4 animatronics, you're dealing with 11 hostile robots. There are no doors to close. Your only protection? A Freddy Fazbear mask, a flashlight, and a music box that must never stop playing.
This guide covers every night, every animatronic, and every strategy you need to survive. If you haven't played the original, check our FNAF 1 guide first.
Core Mechanics
Freddy Mask
Fools most animatronics into thinking you're one of them. Put it on when you see them in the vents.
Flashlight
Used to check the hallway and ward off Foxy. Flash the hallway regularly to keep Foxy at bay.
Music Box
Must be wound via CAM 11 constantly. If it stops, the Puppet attacks and NOTHING can stop it.
Vent Lights
Check left and right vents for approaching animatronics. If you see one, immediately put on the mask.

⚠️ Critical Threats
Balloon Boy: If he enters your office, he DISABLES your flashlight permanently for that night. Without the flashlight, Foxy will kill you. Always check the left vent!
The Puppet: If the music box fully unwinds, the Puppet WILL kill you and there is absolutely no way to stop it. The music box is your #1 priority at all times.
The Survival Loop
FNAF 2 is all about a repeating loop of actions. Master this loop and you'll survive:
🔄 The Essential Loop (Repeat All Night)
Wind the Music Box — Open cameras, go to CAM 11, wind it. This is ALWAYS step 1.
Flash the Hallway — Close cameras, use flashlight to check the hall. This resets Foxy.
Check Left Vent Light — Look for Balloon Boy or Withered Bonnie/Chica.
Check Right Vent Light — Look for Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, or Mangle.
If animatronic spotted → MASK ON — Put on the Freddy mask immediately and wait 3-5 seconds.
Back to Step 1 — Wind that music box again!
Night-by-Night Guide
🌙 Night 1
EASYNight 1 is a tutorial. Only Toy Bonnie and Toy Chica are active, and they move slowly. Focus on learning the music box mechanic. Wind it regularly, check vents occasionally, and you'll be fine. Practice the survival loop at a relaxed pace.
Active: Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica (slow)
🌙 Night 2
EASY-MEDIUMToy Freddy, Mangle, and Balloon Boy join the party. The Withered animatronics start appearing too. Start taking the survival loop more seriously. Check both vents regularly and keep flashing the hallway for Foxy.
New threats: Toy Freddy, Mangle, Balloon Boy, Withered Freddy
🌙 Night 3
MEDIUMThis is where things get serious. All Withered animatronics are now active. Foxy starts rushing down the hallway more frequently. You need to flash the hallway between every music box wind. The Puppet's music box drains faster now — don't let it get low!
Key strategy: Speed up your loop. Wind music box → flash hallway → check vents → repeat. Don't waste time looking at other cameras.
🌙 Night 4
HARDEveryone is aggressive now. The music box drains significantly faster, and animatronics approach from all directions simultaneously. This is the first night where most players start dying a lot.
Key strategy: Stop checking cameras except for CAM 11 (music box). Only use vent lights and hallway flashlight. Speed is everything. If you see an animatronic in the vent, mask on IMMEDIATELY — don't finish what you're doing first.
🌙 Night 5
VERY HARDThe final main night. Everything is at near-maximum aggression. The music box drains extremely fast. You'll need to wind it almost constantly while somehow managing all other threats.
Key strategy: The music box is your ONLY camera task. Wind it → immediately close cameras → flash hallway → left vent → right vent → mask if needed → wind again. This cycle should take about 3-4 seconds total. Any hesitation and the Puppet or Foxy will get you.
🌙 Night 6
EXTREMEThe bonus night. Everything at maximum aggression. The music box drains at its fastest speed. You need perfect execution of the survival loop with zero wasted time. Expect to die many, many times before clearing this.
Key strategy: Same as Night 5 but faster. Consider wearing headphones — audio cues for animatronics approaching vents can save the fraction of a second you need.
🌙 Custom Night (10/20 Mode)
NEARLY IMPOSSIBLEAll 10 animatronics on difficulty 20. This is one of the hardest challenges in the entire FNAF series. The margin for error is essentially zero. You need frame-perfect inputs and favorable RNG from the animatronics.
Fun fact: 10/20 mode in FNAF 2 is widely considered harder than 50/20 mode in UCN because the mask and music box mechanics leave almost no time for anything else.
Top Tips for Survival
💡 Pro Tips
1. Music box is ALWAYS priority #1. If the Puppet escapes, you're dead. No exceptions. Always wind it before doing anything else.
2. Don't look at other cameras. From Night 3 onward, only use CAM 11 for the music box. Vent lights and the hallway flashlight tell you everything else you need to know.
3. Listen carefully. Each animatronic makes distinct sounds when approaching. Learn these and you can react faster than relying on visuals alone.
4. Mask up fast. The instant you see anyone in a vent, put on the mask. Don't finish winding the music box first — put the mask on NOW.
5. Flash Foxy consistently. Flash the hallway after every music box wind. This keeps Foxy from charging. If you see him already in the hallway, flash repeatedly until he retreats.
6. Watch for Balloon Boy. Check the left vent constantly. If BB enters your office, your flashlight dies and Foxy becomes unstoppable. BB is the silent killer of many runs.
7. Use headphones. Audio cues are crucial in later nights. You can hear animatronics in the vents before you see them.
Frequently Asked Questions
❓ How does the Freddy mask work?
The mask fools most animatronics into thinking you're an animatronic too. Put it on when you see one in the vents. It works on everyone EXCEPT Foxy (use flashlight) and the Puppet (use music box).
❓ Is FNAF 2 harder than FNAF 1?
Yes, significantly. 11 animatronics instead of 4, no doors, and the constant music box management make it much more demanding. Check our difficulty rankings for a full comparison.
❓ How do you stop the Puppet?
You can't stop the Puppet once it escapes. Your ONLY defense is keeping the music box wound at all times via CAM 11. If you hear "Pop Goes the Weasel" playing, you're about to die.
❓ What happens if Balloon Boy gets in?
Balloon Boy disables your flashlight permanently for the rest of the night. Without the flashlight, Foxy will inevitably kill you. Preventing BB from entering is critical.
❓ How long does it take to beat FNAF 2?
The main 5 nights take 2-3 hours. Adding Night 6 and Custom Night brings it to 4-5 hours. Full completion takes 7-9 hours. See our complete time guide for details.
